NEWSTEAD INAUGURAL PRODUCTION SALE 2008
DORPERS TO $1400 AT NEWSTEAD SALE
Mark Phelps, Queensland Country Life 28/02/2008
Rams sold for a top of $1350 and ewes to $1400 at the John and Kerry Mackay's inaugural on-property Newstead Dorper Stud sale at Boggabilla, NSW.
The $1400 sale topper - the graded type five Kaya 060089- went to Grant, Tracey and Monica Hutchings Tenterfield, NSW, who are in the process of building a stud ewe flock. The Hutchings also paid $1100 for another high-quality ewe, Macquarie 050082.
The top priced ram a $1350 was Newstead 060132, an outstanding class five sire which displayed excellent carcase characteristics. The ram went to Mike and Lisa Flanagan, Gum Flat via Inverell.
In the ram section, 31 head sold for a top of $1350 to average $713. In the ewe section, 59 head sold for a top of $1400 to avereage of $695. Overall the sale acheived a 77 per cent clearance to gross $63,125. A total of 27 bid cards was issued, with sheep selling to 20 buyers.
Volume buyers were Terry Groube and Liz Williams, Coondoo Park, Coondoo Mountain, via Gympie. Mr Groube said they were assessing a number of meat breeds for the higher rainfall country and had been impressed by the carcase and meat quality of Dorpers. The pair bought three rams for an avereage $800 and 13 ewes for an average $698.
Colin and Jessie McLean, Pamberry Dorpers, Warick, bought nine ewes for $698. The McLeans, who previously farmed in Zimbabwe, are also currently in the process of building their stud ewe flock.
Also active at the sale were Selwyn, Jocelyn and Nathan Maller, Glenora Downs, Wallumbilla, who were buying Dorper rams for their Mitchell property Lussvale. Selwyn Maller said the seven rams bought for an avereage $707 would be put over 400 Damara ewes currently running on the property.
Ian and Kerry Canning, Ningaling, Hungerford, bought six rams for an avereage $550. They will be joined to 500 second and third cross ewes. Mr. Canning said he was aiming to develop a 1500-2000 head pure Dorper ewe flock over the next few years. Martin Pye, from Captains Flat, southern NSW, paid an avereage $635 for five ewes.
Mr. Pye, who operates Crawlers Gully Dorper Stud, said the ewes would go into his 65-head stud flock. "I was particularly impressed by the length of the Newstead flock", he said.
Newstead principal John Mackay said he was very encouraged by the result of the inaugural sale and the growing awareness of the outstranding carcases produced by Dorpers.
"It's really pleasing to see the investment we have made in South African genetics are delivering superior Dorper sheep", he said.
"Meat sheep have extraordinary opportunities both in domestic and international markets. We want to make sure we are in the best position possible by producing the best sheepmeat possible."
Meanwhile the Mackays will soon open their new butcher shop in Waggamba Square, Goondiwindi, which will feature grainfed Dorper lamb marketed under the Mackay's own Boggabilla Lamb brand.
